To make the entire procedure comfortable for your child, the Dentist will make sure the tooth area to receive treatment is thoroughly numb.

Depending on the size of the filling and the tooth being worked on, a rubber dam may be used.  It functions like a safety net, preventing debris from falling to the back of the throat and causing other problems.

Your Dentist then removes the decay and shapes the tooth with the handpiece.  To mold the filling to the shape of the tooth, the Dentist first surrounds it with a thin, flexible band, and a small wooden wedge is placed between the band and the adjacent tooth to hold it snugly in place.  Next, the Dentist presses the filling material into the tooth.

White fillings harden when they are exposed to a special high-intensity light, while silver fillings harden on their own over a prescribed period of time.

Your Dentist will then check the bite with a colored tape which shows where your teeth are coming together and will make any needed adjustments.  Finally, the Dentist will also glide a piece of floss between the teeth to make sure there are no tight spots.  This completes the procedure.
