An adult's dark-colored tooth usually indicates that the tooth nerve has become infected, and the normal flow of blood into and out of the tooth is no longer flowing.

To remedy this situation, in most cases the tooth will require root canal treatment. In some situations, the tooth will "die," and does not require a root canal followed by a crown.  In this latter case, to restore the tooth to its natural color, alternatives to consider are:

  • bonding
  • veneers
  • a crown
